Summer of '25

The other day I noticed that my calendar had a little factory notation on it saying “Summer begins” on June 20th.  Well I’m pretty sure it was well under way by at least June 1st.  Asphalt-softening heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and buzzing cicadas pretty much let everyone know when “summer began” in our little nook of the panhandle.  And with that, it’s also the time of weekend sailboarding.  Whether lessons, practice, or summer series races, the Summer of ‘25 is upon us folks.  Let’s get out there, get hold of a boom, and enjoy it!

See you all out there!

It was a GREAT PARTY!

By Andrea Bennett

We had a wonderful time at the 52nd Stephen C Smith Memorial Regatta held on April 25th – 27th! One frequent sailor to the regatta said they “Love this event! You all don’t forget the party on the beach!” Another participant described the view of the sails from the beach as “butterflies dancing on the water.”

This event was hosted by the Shell Point Sailboard Club (SPSC) and the Apalachee Bay Yacht Club (ABYC), in partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS). The event goal is to raise funds to support the Big Bend Area ACS programs, such as the Hope Lodge and rides to medical treatment through the “Road to Recovery” program, for example. Our sponsorships and advertisers continue to help this event thrive. Much appreciation goes out to: Dr. Mark Powell, and Mike & Nicole Koski for their presenting sponsors contributions, and Dr Kristin Korinko, PhD for Commodore level sponsorship. Vice Commodore level sponsorships were from Johathan Waters and Family, Prime Meridian Bank, and Tri-Eagle Sales. Captain level donations included: Adam & Andrea Bennett, Cabana Canvas, Inc., Centennial Bank, John & Juliet Stacklyn, Linda Clarke Travel, Rick’s Small Sailboats, LLC, Vaughn and Lynn Williams, and Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare (TMH).  The past 51 years has raised over $600,000 with this year’s donation soon to be announced.  Either way the abacus sums, the volunteers and participants are the heart of the Smith Regatta!

It takes a special group of people to plan and carry out such an event. As the Chair of the 52nd Regatta I am honored and impressed with such dedication and fortitude. Recognition and Big thanks go out to my planning committee and major crew: Wright & Janice Finney, Linda Downey, Kristin Korinko, Bill Olson, Marianne Gengenbach, John McBride, Bob Graves, Deb Berlinger, Michael Getman, Stan Derzypolski, Sandy Layne, John Gilbert, Liz Montgomery, Rick Upson, Rose Lane, Joe & Teensi, Rick & Judy Knerr, and some hopeless hippy named Adam Bennett.  This by no means covers all of the volunteers that stepped up and let their light shine for others.

We had a record turnout of windsurfers, thanks to Mark Powell and other peeps for spreading the word. Other vessels were present, but not as plentiful. A call out to those who kept us fed, including: Michael Getman and Fat Doug’s LCBT for Friday night dinner, the Wakulla Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary Post 4538 for service at the Smith Gille, and the ladies from the Apalachee Bay Volunteer Fire Department for Saturday and Sunday breakfasts. With drinks all weekend from the beer truck and music on Saturday from Mechanical Lincoln. A special thanks to the American Cancer Society for providing the reuseable registration bags and their representative, James Atkinson for attending and speaking to the crowd on Sunday.

If that wasn’t enough, with golf carts and chairs lined up on the beach it certainly was the grand portion of our event. Community donations provided twelve chance baskets to choose from, and two Royal Straight Flush baskets for the most chance tickets bought. There was a plethora of auction items for which to bid. Prior to these beachside activities on Sunday we had awards. Although most awards were for the sailors’ accomplishments we had two special recognitions. The first was to Vaughn Williams for the “Dan Smith Memorial Award for the Best Overall Sailboard”. The second is the “Gallant Sailor Award”, which was awarded to Donna McMahon for activities too colorful to discuss in print (ask around, I am sure someone will tell of the beer truck antics).

It was a very full weekend of things to do, people to talk to, and beautiful sights to see. I loved hearing the stories of past participants who have returned after a hiatus, and the smiling faces of beach goers, for it is strong evidence that this is a very special event, especially after over 50 years! I have been tanned, exhausted, uplifted, impressed, inebriated, well fed and honored by the kindness I have experienced. Thank you to ALL who stepped up, and if you are not among that group who served, why not?

It is a great adventure and joy! Thank you for sharing your light and kindness.

Scribe's Note:  For those who didn’t get a chance to meet them, John Doolan from Australia sailed and won the LT fleet and Valentina Vix from Marathon, Florida and originally from Venezuela, came in second in the LT fleet. I gleaned this article from Facebook posts they made.

John Doolan: 25-Apr-2025 Shell Point, Wakulla Florida, USA

Board : Windsurfer LT

Rig : Windsurfer One Design 5.7m

Fin : Windsurfer LT (MFC)

Today (Friday) we arrived in Shell Point for the Stephen C Smith Memorial Regatta which starts tomorrow. So Valentina Vix and I took the opportunity to go for a recreational sail to familiarize ourselves with the location. We managed to find the St. Marks Lighthouse and avoided both the natural oyster shelf and the alligators which reside in the marshes of the bay (phew - I will crap my pants if I see one of those while I'm windsurfing)!

We also caught up with local Mark Powell out on the water and after we finished sailing we collected our registration package and beer truck wrist band. The evening was spent socializing with the locals and enjoying the fruits of the beer truck. We had a great evening meeting many of the locals, so much so that we were almost too late for dinner in Crawfordville. Thankfully San Marcos Mexican was open late (10pm) and we managed to grab a delicious meal to finish off a great day.

Racing starts tomorrow, and it'll be great to see the wide range of boards on the water, including Windsurfer LT's, Mistral M1, Mistral Equipe's, Mistral Prodigy's, Kona's, Fanatic Ultra Cats and Fanatic Mega Cats.

Today (Sunday) was the final day of the Stephen C. Smith Memorial Regatta here in Shell Point, Wakulla County, FL. Today we just had the one race which was a longer race to a buoy at the outer channel markers, then port to a short wing mark which you could round in either direction, then back to the buoy at the outer channel mark which we took to starboard and then back down the channel with the incoming tide to the Start/Finish line just off the beach.

I got a great beach start on port tack from the port end of the line, easily crossing the fleet who were fighting the fast flowing income tide. From there I headed straight for the shallows to keep out of the tide all the way to the first mark. The light wind was fading in and out and swinging left and right 15-20 degrees, so I tacked on the knocks and kept to the shallows and out of the incoming tide, however as I made my last tack to lay the 1st mark, the race committee decided to pick up the mark to shorten the course, thankfully they dropped it very close to me, however I had to wait for them to drop the mark before I could round it. As I rounded it the race committee boat said don't go that high to the next mark, we are going to move it, so I altered my course, heading to where I hoped they were going to drop the mark, however I beat the committee boat to the spot and had to wait for them to again drop the mark in its new position before heading back to the 1st mark again (lucky I had a decent lead by this stage). I rounded the top mark to starboard and headed for the finish, running with the incoming tide in the channel with two guys on Kona 9.0m rigs and Valentina Vix not too far behind. Pumping all the way to the finish I managed to hold on for the long distance (I use that term very loosely, it's only relative to the very short courses from yesterday) win.

Valentina pumped her way past the two Kona's for a Windsurfer LT 1st and 2nd with Mark Powell recovering very well from missing the start for the 3rd in the LT Fleet.

We had a great weekend at the regatta and met some fantastic people. It was great to see windsurfing alive and well in the USA, including a fleet of 11 Windsurfer LT's, in fact there were even more Windsurfer LT's competing with larger rigs in the Limited fleet.

Once again a huge thank you to Cody from Sandy Point Progressive Sports for the great support and for providing our charter boards during my trip over the past couple of weeks.

Hats off to the organizers of the 52nd Stephen C Smith regatta for their enormous fund-raising effort for the fight against Cancer while running a super fun and social event.

Valentina Vix

The race day event at Smith Regatta, held in Shell Point, Wakulla County, Florida, was highly successful. The presence of an alligator crossing the road at the entrance of the beach community did not pose a significant threat, whereas the availability of a beer trailer led to some instances of overdrinking. Me and John Doolan are overwhelmed with how friendly everyone is.

The Beach start line is one of a kind. The race committee is located under a colorful umbrella. A great number of windsurfers had turned up. Cody from Sandy Point Progressive sports has been extremely helpful to everyone.

We sailed 5 races followed by a dinner in the Yach club, music at the beach and more beer!!! We had a full day!

SPSC Club Minutes, Tuesday, 5/13/2025

Place: District 850

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 pm with only 13 members present. The good part was a new member was there! Wish some of our past commodores would show up.

The commodore asked for a motion to approve the April meeting minutes which was given, and minutes were approved at 7:02.

Commodore: When he got to the beach for the Smith regatta, he was stunned at the Andrew Lloyd Wright style training trailer and decorations to match the hanging gardens of Babylon. Benches are a great hangout spot.

Vice: IGN

Scribe: Haikus are back, and Jack promised to crank up his AI to write some of “his” own. Have 2 articles coming in for the next newsletter about the Smith regatta.

Purser:

  • Money was spent and we had money coming in.

  • Though the trailer expenses rose due to the addition of the benches and some other things, we were still under the 5k budget.

  • Memberships stand at 92.

Vaughan: Working on a roundel (a circular disc used as a symbol) for the club and asked if this is something we should be pursuing. The group said yes, and Vaughan is trying to contact the great Swami for assistance.

Bob Andrews Spoke about the need for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the many task the club does, from running lessons all the way to running a regatta and the many tasks that need doing. He has started the process by contacting John Gilbert.

Discussion items

Smith Regatta: Need new people to get involved.  People were encouraged to come to the Smith wrap up meeting on May 19th at Casa Grande Margaritas & Cocina’s at 6:30. The race was well attended and lots of discussion on when you can and cannot pump. The conclusion was that other than Kona, which can never pump, go for it. LT rules are too complicated, and no one adheres to them anyway.

Training Trailer: Need to crank up leveling jacks so they don’t rust in place and put in concrete pillars instead. Still discussing what to do to the inside.

Beach Workdays: ROADies will take care of removing concrete blocks and excess wood from the beach.

Program Ideas: Basic training stuff.  Rights of way and rules of the road. Wind Ceremony. Freestyle prior to Rick working with folks on free style.

Program for the night: Bob G showed how the race scoring program works and then woke everyone up with videos on light wind freestyle and some kite crash videos.

Adjourned when all was said and done at 7:55
