The Dog Days of August

Sirius the dog-star can be seen rising in the east just before dawn which even the Greeks and Romans knew meant, “man is it ever HOT!”   So, come on out and get in the water and sail, swim, or just hang out in the shade in our little gathering area under the tree by the training trailer and drink something cold. We’ve got training, practice, races, and general socializing on the weekends, and when the wind is up there’ll probably be some people out sailing on weekdays.  Enjoy the warmth, ‘cause it won’t last.  Before you know it it’ll be getting dark early and blowing cold.

Summer Series 2025 ~ by Bob G

Finally got a race in on July 13th  before the storms came!  We had 12 racers on the course in 4 divisions, with LT and Sport being the most crowded. The wind was good, though it shifted some once the race got under way, but the course was fun and competitive.

Thanks to Wright and Perry for setting up a great course and for all the folks that came out to race and to Bob Andrews for the use of his boat.

On July 27th we were able to complete two races in very light wind conditions before the wind completely died.  We did not have as many competitors as the first time, but the ones that raced were relentless in trying to get across the finish line.  With a north/northwest wind blowing and us wanting to start from the beach, race captain Perry had to figure something out, so the first mark was a broad reach south and the second upwind to the northwest.  The little wind there was shifted frequently.  The course was very quick to complete until you got near the finish line which was to the west of the training trailer, right near where the channel going west is, so many a sailor came in quickly only to suddenly lose wind and start moving west with the incoming tide, thus missing the finish line and having to go around. Joe Sisson, on the other hand, appeared to have no problem, completely dominating both races.

Thanks to Perry Morris for running the races and getting feedback from the racers if they wanted to do another, and to John Stacklyn for providing the committee boat.

In our return to the summer series last year, 2024, we were able to get in 15 races by the end of the season, with 9 races in the books by August.  Weather this year has not been good for the series but there are 3 race days left!

SPSC Club Minutes, Tuesday, 7/8/2025

Place: District 850

The meeting was called to order at 7:01 pm with 21 present, the best yet, but a number I know we can improve on if we can get some folks who want to come but keep forgetting about it.

Minutes approved at 7:01

Commodore: Wants to get to the beach but something always comes up!

Vice Commodore: Wants to do more free style clinics and will do so from 11-2:30 on practice days.

Scribe: Thanked Kristin for taking minutes at previous meeting and Ryne for doing so at board meeting. In this club someone is always willing to step up!

Purser: Not present. Rumor has it that he has skipped town with all our money and is living in luxury in a mobile home in Two Egg, Florida.

Past Commodore: Recognized Dr. Ava Moffit for finishing up all her schooling, getting married, and (sob) leaving us.

Board Member Ryne Least: IGN

Board Member Vaughan Williams: Gave us a Rondall update showing us different images.  Lots of discussion on which one to use.

Board Member Bob Andrews: In efforts to come up with operating procedures for our different events, he spoke with John Gilbert about what he does and John said he would write something up.

Discussion items

Endless Summer:

  • Get gift cards or donations from businesses you patronize

  • Start searching for sponsors.

Web site: Deb indicated the cost of WIX, or web platform, is rising and at the same time we need to look for a replacement for her.  She uses Cold Fusion for a lot of the reports we rely on for events. Rick Upson indicated there were some turn key sites that he will look into.

Rum ‘n’ Root Beer: Laura Least asked for a $400 budget for the event.

Program: Videos were shown of last years Endless Summer by our Commodore.

Adjourned when all was said and done at 8:09
