Commodore's Comments

By Amy Crowson

Last month with the occurrence of the Annual Business Meeting the club elected new officers to begin serving their terms in January. We welcome several new members to the board and say thank you to those who have served us well and are taking a break. Next years officers will be:

Officers: At Large Members:
Commodore Lee Chapin Linda Downey
Vice Commodore Bob Grave Bob Andrews
Purser Wright Finney Donna McMahon
Scribe Ann Getman Bill Olson

Of course, I will be moving to past commodore and Tina, Jack, Rick and Dave will take a break to hopefully find a little more time to get on the water. I thank everyone who has served on the board this year; each and every one of you has done a great job and has been very supportive of the club during my tenure as commodore. I truly feel the club is in a better place because of the work that has been accomplished this year. We owe a big thank you to this years board and all those who supported them.

Beach Clean Up

Shell Point was a central meeting place for the Keep Wakulla Beautiful Coastal Clean Up project and there was a great turnout. SPSC had 16 members participate in this year’s event. Lee C. and Rick K. among others showed up very early to help clean and literally pick up 100’s of cigarette butts near the small picnic shelter. Perry Morris helped a bunch of students clean up the canals and later in the morning a number of folks did a wonderful job cleaning up the sandspurs in preparation of the Endless Summer. Thanks to all those who helped.

Endless Summer

The 20th Annual Endless Summer Sailboard Classic occurred two weeks earlier than normal this year on what turned out to be a beautiful September weekend. While the treat of bad weather deterred a few folk the turnout was fairly good with sailors from Florida, Atlanta and South Carolina attending. The little bit of bad weather was over early and did not interfere with the festivities. A few folks got wet on the Friday night wing fest but I believe the wings were eaten that evening.

The sailing was good on both days and there was enough wind to run races before and after lunch (of yummy Donaldo’s fare) on Saturday and a long distance race on Sunday. There was a very active Novice Fleet with a number of our established sailors jumping in to help them learn. Denise Waters even jumped on a board, clothes and all, to get these new sailors on the water.

The event ended with awards being handed out to the racers and gumbo contestants. The gumbo as always was fabulous with a number of our members contributing some good food. This years contest was one of the closest with Leah C. taking the top honors. The Perry William’s award went to Dave and Lizzie Denmark for all the years of service they have given to support the sport of sailboarding and the club.

This year’s event was a success and an enjoyable one for those who attended. The success of this event was primarily because so many of our club members work hard to put it all together; over half of our membership took on some role in this event. Thank you all for making this all happen year after year.

Future Events

The Atlanta Races on Lake Lanier occur the weekend of October 20th and Bobby’s Fall event in Ft. Walton occurs the following weekend. These events usually bring home lots of gossip. Try to put one on your calendar, have a good time and bring home your own dirt.

The club has also set a date for its annual Christmas Party. This year the party will be hosted by Lee Chapin in a wonderful heated environment. The festivities will be on FRIDAY December 14th at the Board of Realtors facility on Thomasville Rd. Mark your calendars. We will update the web site as more information is available.
