2006 Southeast Race Series Wrap Up

By Paul Hansard

The Fall Showdown in Ft. Walton, which took place during the last weekend in October, officially marked the final event in the 2006 Southeast Regional Windsurfing Series. The winter/spring segment of the Series began with the Inlet-to-Inlet Race in Ft Lauderdale, and was followed by the Island Style Classic in Sarasota, the Calema Midwinters in Merritt Island, the Spring into Liquid Regatta in Ft. Walton, the Spring Windfest in Merritt Island, and the Stephen C. Smith Regatta at Shell Point. The final fall segment began again with the Endless Summer Sailboard Classic at Shell Point, the Atlanta Fall Classic at Lake Lanier, Georgia, and finished with the Fall Showdown. In all, 213 windsurfers competed in the Series, coming from San Francisco to Virginia, and from Wisconsin to Texas to compete in Southeast Region events.

Series competition was scored in four classes: Longboard, Formula, Hybrid, and Sport. The only eligibility requirements were that racers attend a minimum of three events, and be current members of US Windsurfing. Although only three events were required for eligibility, racers were scored using the relative class rankings of their best five events, with a default score of 2 points applying to any missed events. Under this scoring philosophy, a really good racer attending four events would finish with roughly the same number of points as an average racer attending five events, while a really good racer attending five or more events would very likely win.

For the last two years, funds provided by the Shell Point Sailboard Club were matched by US Windsurfing, and were used to purchase awards for the top place finishers in each of the four classes. Additionally, prizes for the Longboard and Hybrid classes were generously donated by Watersports West. Prizes for the top Formula racers were contributed by Steve and Marty Gottlieb of Sandy Point Progressive Sports.
